Evonik P84® Polyimide – Taking Plastics Beyond the Limits

Manufacturers and Designers across industries are looking to produce stronger, more reliable parts for extreme operating environments. Evonik’s P84® polyimide pushes the boundaries, and is an ideal material for replacing metal and ceramic parts.

P84® Polyimides offer distinct advantages including high operating temperatures of -196°C to 300°C (-320°F to 572°F), corrosion resistance, superior dielectric properties, excellent creep resistance, chemical stability, exceptional wear behavior, and superior design flexibility. This has led to an increasing use of high performance polyimides P84® NT and P84® UHT for demanding applications such as bushings, sliding bearings, thrust washers, guides, and gears.

Specific topics will include:

  • Low wear rate bearings or thrust washers maintain high dimensional stability resulting in a longer lifetime without any performance loss

  • Performance comparison of P84® NT and P84® UHT versus other high performance polymers including PEEK and PAI

  • Low friction bearings promoting efficient energy transmission without oil and grease lubricants

  • Incorporating fillers such as graphite and molybdenum sulfide as solid lubricants allow “dry running” conditions and increased thermal and electrical conductivity

  • Maintaining high dimensional stability and resistance against the harsh cleaning chemical exposures and conditions

  • Electronic applications benefitting from the superior dielectric properties of polyimides

  • Resistance of P84® UHT against harsh chemical exposure, steam, and high temperatures.
