Long Duration Energy Storage - A Key Piece in US and Europe's Decarbonization Plans

The interconnected grids in Europe and US are rapidly decarbonizing as more and more renewable energy sources are coming online. So far, the intermittency that wind and solar are bringing has been well handled with short duration storage solutions that have provided e.g. frequency support, ramp support to manage the so called duck curve.

These systems are now starting to experience a new phase in the decarbonization journey where renewable energy will be providing 30-90% of the energy. This calls for other forms of flexibility in the grid. Sumitomo SHI FW is pioneering the Liquid Air Energy Storage, a long duration energy storage technology, which is complementing the common BESS technology to achieve higher shares of renewable energy while still maintaining a resilient and stable grid.

Specific topics will include:

  • Explore the necessity for long-duration energy storage in the decarbonization efforts of the US and Europe's grids.
  • Understand the value that long-duration energy storage brings to market players in these regions.
  • Examine the policies and market mechanisms in both the European Union (EU) and the United States (US) related to long-duration energy storage.
  • Identify the requirements and incentives needed to encourage the widespread deployment of Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) technologies.
