Multifuel and WTE Plants - Fuel Flexibility and Decarbonization in Utility & CHP

Specific topics will include:

  • The low sensitivity of the CFB to fuel quality excursions when using opportunity and other low quality yet economic fuels

  • How biomass use can be adjusted to match local supply and affordable imports on seasonal basis

  • How the CFB avoids ash, fouling, and corrosion issues by incorporating step grids and an INTREX superheat/reheat heat exchanger

  • How the RDF share in overall fuel mix affects the CFB boiler concept

In this informative webinar, Boguslaw Krzton, Business Development Director, CEE & Balkans for Sumitomo SHI FW, will discuss how Sumitomo SHI FW’s advanced CFB multifuel technology can provide highly reliable, utility-scale power generation burning a wide-range of biomass and waste fuels while producing extremely low emissions.

Below are some of the questions discussed during the webinar:

  • Do you also provide other types of technologies for solid incineration, such as moving grates or Bubbling Fluidized Beds?

  • Is there any correlation curve with respect to chlorine in fuel and the SH outlet temperature? How much chlorine indicates the need for an empty 2nd pass in the boiler?

  • How does CFB technology compare with grate-fired boilers in a WTE scenario?

  • How secure is the biomass fuel supply in the long term?

  • When using alternative fuels such as biomass, RDF, etc. (as co-firing with coal), is there any additional preparation method required before feeding it into the boiler?

  • Do you see any chance to deliver a 25MWt complete power plant (boiler, turbine, generator, flue gas cleaning, external fuel handling, and necessary civil work) for RDF at the value of 25MEUR or less?

  • What is the gross calorific value of wood residues and agro biomass?

  • What is the smallest economically viable CFB burning multi-fuels, including RDF and waste coal?

  • Based on your experience, for burning 100% RDF, what are the problems and availability of the power plant? What is the max bed temperature while burning RDF to prevent agglomeration?

  • Is there any major operational parameter that needs to be noticed, i.e., the increasing concentration of acidic gases in flue gas when using biomass co-firing with coal, and how do we treat it?

  • Do these units allow for automation? How many hours without needing to stop for maintenance? How do you avoid bed agglomeration?

  • About Bubbling Fluidized Bed Boilers, do you think that CFB boilers' OPEX and CAPEX costs will justify the projects on CFB instead of BFB boilers for low range load?

  • Is there a possibility of co-firing liquid fuels such as spent wash/vinasse (distillery waste) in CFB boilers?

  • What about the requirement for CFB minimum operation capacity with design capacity?

  • Are there any activities of SHI FW in the field of carbon capture & storage (CCS) applications for the power sector?

  • RDF or demolition wood creates blockages on fluidized hammers, right? How to prevent this phenomenon in the furnace? Can internal cameras send information?

  • Do you have any experience with dry sludge injection (water treatment plant) to the CFB? Ratio, limitation, risks?

  • If the grate system may use heterogeneous fuels, why is it not able to co-fire? Is it because it is specialized in only one kind of fuel, and then is difficult to manage with two different fuels? Perhaps if it would be possible that both fuels have the same particle size approx? Or is it also important LHV and % humidity etc.?

  • Is it possible to modernize an existing coal-fired CFB boiler to burn biomass or even waste?

  • What is the minimum load without supplementary burners of the CFB boiler that you typically guarantee?

  • Do you need any additional pollution control measures after the CFB boiler to meet stringent air emission standards?

  • What are the main reasons for unplanned outages of waste or multifuel CFB boilers? Are you collecting such data?
