K&A hosted a clean power technology seminar on the topic “Technology Options to Address India’s Changing Energy Needs: A Clean Energy Seminar on Biomass CFB, Dry FGD and Calcium Looping for Carbon Capture.” The event was held at the ITC Maurya Hotel in New Delhi, India.
Some of the Important Points discussed during the Seminar:
India is expected to commission another 30,000 MW of new muti-fuel power plants over the next 8 years averaging around 3-4,000 MW per year
Largely CFB or PC plants with biomass co-firing to meet CO2 protocols
NOx and SO2 regulations and biomass co-firing favour CFB over PC in many cases
FGD markets continue to grow with nearly 80,000 MW available for retrofit
Smaller projects less than 300 MW in size are distinctly favourable for Semi-Dry systems due to low CAPEX – this opportunity totals ~25,000 MW over 4 years
Carbon capture is emerging as a major priority for Indian energy producers, cement companies and refineries
Lack of CO2 market regulations and incentives are causing Indian energy companies to focus on carbon capture and not so much on transport or storage
Conversion of CO2 to chemicals, methanol and derivatives, polyurethane, jet fuel, plastics value chain, bio-fertilizers, combining CO2 & green hydrogen to produce green jet fuels etc. remain key to justify the economics of the projects
NTPC currently engaged in a 20 ton per day pilot to convert the captured CO2 into methanol
Several pilot opportunities and follow-up discussions emerged from the seminar for CO2 capture opportunities in India
Several opportunities for boilers and service opportunities emerged for ISGEC
