Liquid Air Energy Storage Advances India’s March to Net Zero
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has proposed a decarbonization plan in its “Net Zero by 2050: A Road Map for the Global Energy Sector” report. The IEA suggests that nothing less than a “complete transformation of how we produce, transport, and consume energy” is necessary to reduce global CO2 emissions to zero by 2050.” The IEA plan envisions massive additions of renewables (principally solar PV and wind) combined with the rapid expansion of carbon capture and storage, energy storage, and significant investment in new transmission grid infrastructure.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ambitious plan to reach net zero emissions by 2070. The government has announced plans to construct 500GW of renewable energy capacity (equivalent to ~50% of the nation’s projected energy requirements) and a sink for a billion tonnes of CO2 per year by 2030. Further, India’s Ministry of Power has unveiled a US$30 billion plan to build over 50,000 km of new transmission lines to boost inter-state transmission capacities and evacuate the energy produced by renewable energy sources. The additional transmission capacity is also expected to aid the integration of 51.5 GW of energy storage systems with the national power grid.
The deployment of advanced energy storage systems to balance the large-scale development of intermittent renewable resources is an integral part of the Indian government’s roadmap for the energy sector. In India, energy storage systems are expected to contribute to grid stability, relieve network congestion and perform bulk energy shifting to address temporal energy shortages.
